"Para Maalala", 2022

Duration: Infinite

Twin analog tape recorders, endless tape loop, ratchet straps

The words para maalala mean to remember in Tagalog. This piece was created in memory of my grandfather who passed away in the Philippines ten years ago. It is about memory, repetition, longing to be close to someone and the passage of time. The two tape recorders which are bound in place and kept at a constant distance, share one thin loop of tape which stretches out between them. The music and sound recorded on the tape is composed in such a way that it creates a dialogue between the two machines. They share a story about my family history told by my grandfather, someone that I felt a close connection with, even though we were an ocean apart.
